I've seen these 5 pinion planets fail in as little as 500 miles. To complicate things, MANY 4L60E builders started installing "Off brand" planetaries. 4 and 5 pinions both use a similar fixed needle bearing set that the rear sun gear rides on.Ī true GM 5 pinion rear planetary sells for near $400. Planetaries are not a high failure area in a 700 or a 4L60E. 4 pinions have been used since 1982 in the 700R4's, and remained the same planet until the 4L65E. In reality, there's been no real proof that 5 pinions is any stronger than 4. Many "builders started using them as a selling point. Suddenly, everybody thought they were a necessity.
